Read & Ride: Biking Tour of Malört with Josh Noel

Learn the curious history of Chicago’s most “revered and reviled spirit” on this 11-mile biking tour with Josh Noel, author of Malört: The Redemption of a Revered & Reviled Spirit.

Tickets

Join Read & Run Chicago on Friday, July 31 at 6:00 PM for an evening of Chicago history, Malört, and literary fun on our first-ever “Read & Ride,” a collaboration with BFF Bikes.

Over 11 miles out of BFF Bikes (2056 N Damen) we’ll be tracing the history of Malört with author Josh Noel, from its humble beginnings as a homemade spirit sold along Andersonville’s Swedish-filled streets to its apex of cringe marketing (see: “Drink Malört, it's easier than telling people you have nothing to live for”) and eventual home at CH Distillery. Leave with Chicago fun facts, hilarious insider history, and even a mini Malört bottle thanks to CH Distillery.

After the biking tour, celebrate with us at BFF Bikes with sips and snacks and a special Malört raffle, plus a chance to purchase your copy of Malört: The Redemption of a Revered & Reviled Spirit.

Here’s the schedule:

6:00 PM - Arrive at BFF Bikes (2056 N Damen) to check in, mingle, and get ready to ride!

6:05 PM - Welcome and introductions

6:15 PM - Ride begins

8:00 PM - Post-ride Malört party at BFF Bikes (2056 N Damen)

How to prepare:

This route is designed as a beginner no-drop ride, aiming to feel welcoming while still giving you a chance to move through history.

  • Bring: a bike or Divy, a helmet, bike lock, water, and ID

  • Speed: ~12–14 mph

  • Pre-ride briefing: BFF Bikes cover ride safety, the route, and everything you need to know before you roll out
