Jane was an underground abortion counseling service that operated in Chicago from 1969-1973. On this 4-mile running tour in Hyde Park, join Read & Run Chicago guide Kaylee Tock as she guides readers & runners through the neighborhood that housed several important sites related to the collective’s work. You’ll hear more about Jane, including historical context and the path a pregnant person would have taken in 1972, plus have a chance to consider our contemporary landscape and leave with resources to continue fighting for equitable access to knowledge and care.
At the end of the route, we’ll host a panel discussion at Call & Response Books (1390 E Hyde Park Blvd) featuring a former members of Jane.
100% of ticket sale profits will be donated to the Chicago Abortion Fund (CAF). Light snacks from ButcherBox and hydration will be provided, and we'll also have a raffle with fun prizes like a gift card to Early to Bed, Chicago's feminist sex shop since 2001, and giveaways from sweaty ponytales.
No prior reading required, but as we run routes built by stories you’ll have the chance to read, watch, or listen to our recommended books, films, and media about the Jane that helped inspire this running route.
